A good trim does the file a world of good. It will remove all the silences before the needle hits the record, the sound of the stylus landing etc.

Highlight the very beginning of the track as shown above. The music did not start on this recording until around 17.5 seconds. The beginning bit that is highlighted can be safely removed. Go to the end of the recording and delete any waste at the end as well. If the track fades out slowly you should be safer than sorrier, if you leave too much silence it is easy to remove later, but you cannot patch the fadeout tail back if it is removed!
